What the Credit Covers
Duke's program page lists the parts of the job the credit pays toward:
- Conduit, wiring and the outlet that feeds the charger.
- Panel upgrades and breaker installation.
- The EV charger itself.
It does not cover mounting or setting up the charger, or permit fees. Those stay on your bill.
Who Can Use It
The credit is for Duke Energy residential customers in North Carolina. Most homes in Charlotte and the Mecklenburg County towns are on Duke.
Not every nearby home is. Concord runs its own electric system, and parts of Union County around Waxhaw and Indian Trail are on Union Power. Check the name on your power bill first.
Not sure if your install qualifies? Call and we'll walk you through it.
(704) 555-0142How to Claim the Credit
Duke offers two ways to get the money. You can hire your own electrician, or let Duke match you with a contractor and take the credit off the final bill.
If you hire your own electrician, the steps are simple:
- Have the charger installed and pay the invoice.
- Submit the paid invoice to Duke within four months of finishing the job.
- Duke mails you a check for the covered amount.
Ask for an itemized invoice that shows wiring, panel work and charger hardware on separate lines. It makes the covered costs easy for Duke to see.
Things to Know Before You Apply
Duke changes the amount and the rules from time to time. Check the program page before you count on a number.
The federal home charger tax credit ended for installs after June 30, 2026, so the Duke credit is the main help left for most Charlotte homes.
