Common Charger Problems
Most charging problems come down to the charger, the wiring feeding it or the car. An electrician can test the circuit and tell you which one it is.
- The breaker trips every time you charge.
- The charger shows a fault light or error code.
- The outlet, plug or cord feels hot, looks melted or smells like burning.
- Charging starts, then stops after a few minutes.
- The charger has no power at all.
- Charging is much slower than it used to be.
When to Stop Using It
If you see melting, scorch marks or smell burning near the outlet or charger, stop charging and turn off the breaker. Heat damage usually means a loose connection or a part that can't handle the load.
Don't keep resetting a breaker that trips over and over. That's the breaker doing its job, and it's a sign something needs a closer look.

(704) 555-0142What the Electrician Checks
The electrician looks at the breaker, the wire size and every connection between the panel and the charger. They also check that the charger's settings match the circuit it's on.
For plug in chargers, a worn or low quality outlet is a common cause. Swapping it for a heavy duty one, or hardwiring the charger, often solves it. Our NEMA 14-50 outlet page has more on that.
Repair or Replace?
If the problem is in the wiring or outlet, the fix is usually fairly quick. If the charger itself has failed, check the warranty before buying a new one, since the maker may replace a faulty unit.
If it's time for a new charger, we can help with a Level 2 charger installation or a Tesla Wall Connector.
