NEMA 14-50 Outlet Installation for EVs in Charlotte, NC
A NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you plug in a Level 2 charger instead of hardwiring it. Charlotte EV Charger Installation Pros installs the outlet on its own 50 amp circuit.
We use a heavy duty outlet built for nightly charging, add the GFCI protection the code calls for, and handle the county permit.

What a NEMA 14-50 Outlet Is
A NEMA 14-50 is a 240 volt, 50 amp outlet with four slots. It's the same outlet many electric ranges and RV hookups use.
Most plug in EV chargers come with a 14-50 plug, including Tesla's Mobile Connector adapter and plug in versions of the ChargePoint Home Flex, Emporia and Grizzl-E.
On a 50 amp circuit, a plug in charger can run at up to 40 amps. That's enough to cover most daily driving overnight.
When an Outlet Makes More Sense Than Hardwiring
An outlet is the better choice when you might take the charger with you. For a home you own and plan to stay in, we usually suggest hardwiring instead.
A 14-50 outlet is a good fit if:
- You rent, or plan to sell in the next few years.
- You already own a plug in charger or a Tesla Mobile Connector.
- You want the option to unplug the charger and use the outlet for something else.
- You'd like to swap chargers later without calling an electrician.
What Our Outlet Install Includes
Every 14-50 install is a new dedicated circuit that runs only the outlet.
- Check your panel for space and spare capacity.
- Add a 50 amp double pole breaker with GFCI protection.
- Run copper wire sized for 50 amps from the panel to the outlet, in conduit wherever it's exposed.
- Mount a heavy duty 14-50 outlet close to where you park.
- Test the outlet and your charger with the car plugged in.
- Pull the permit and meet the county inspector.
Why the Outlet Itself Matters
The outlet is the weak point in a plug in setup. An EV pulls a heavy load for hours every night, which is very different from a range that runs for an hour or an RV outlet that sits unused.
Cheap outlets can loosen and overheat under that kind of use. We install heavy duty outlets from brands like Hubbell and Bryant, which are built for constant, heavy loads.
Try not to plug and unplug the charger often. Each time wears the contacts a little, so leave it plugged in and use the cable at the car.

(704) 555-0142GFCI Protection and Nuisance Trips
The electrical code calls for GFCI protection on outlets used for EV charging. On a 14-50, that usually means a GFCI breaker in your panel.
Most EV chargers also have their own ground fault protection built in. Once in a while the two don't get along, and the breaker trips for no clear reason.
If that happens, call us before you swap parts. Sometimes it's the breaker, sometimes the charger, and a hardwired install is one way to fix it for good.
NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50?
A NEMA 6-50 is another 50 amp, 240 volt outlet, with three slots instead of four. EV chargers don't use the extra neutral wire a 14-50 has, so a 6-50 works for many of them.
We still suggest a 14-50 for most people, because nearly every plug in charger and adapter is made for it. Check your charger's plug before you choose.
What a 14-50 Outlet Install Costs
ContractorPlus estimates $1,464 to $2,928 for an EV charger install in Charlotte. An outlet job falls in that range too, since the circuit and wire run are the same work.
The distance from your panel to where you park moves the price the most. An outlet on the other side of the garage wall is quick. A long run to a detached garage costs more.
If Duke Energy is your power company, its Charger Prep Credit can help pay for the wiring and breaker. We check what applies to your home when we quote.
